Here they are – the 20 choirs through to the finals of our search for the best school singers in Leicestershire.

More than 100 schools entered the Leicester Mercury's Sing for Your School competition.

They all got into the seasonal spirit by singing their favourite carols, filming the performances and posting the videos up on our website.

We asked Mercury readers to vote for the ones which they liked best – and now all your thousands of votes have been counted up and whittled down to the final 20 schools.

Bryan Hughes, the Mercury's promotions co-ordinator, said: "We have been delighted with the response with 112 schools in the area, submitting more than 180 videos. We feel the standard of the performances has been very high and we think the judges have a tough task ahead choosing the overall winners."

Entries have been split into two categories, for primary and secondary schools.

The finalists are all in with a chance of scooping a £5,000 cash prize with the two runners-up from each category getting £1,000 each.

A panel of judges will meet on Wednesday to tackle the tough job of choosing the winners.

They are: Nick Carter, Mercury editor; Stephen Foster, head of music for the Leicester Diocese; Sophie Pascall, advisory teacher for music and choirs, Leicester-Shire Arts in Education; Enid Millward, project leader for the Learning Service section of the city council and Grant Olding, who wrote the music and lyrics for Curve's Simply Cinderella.

They will watch videos from the finalists and select the winners and runners-up in both categories.

Mr Hughes said: "We would like to thank all the schools across the region for taking part.

"We know they have been putting in huge amounts of time and effort to prepare, rehearse and upload their performances to our website."

Among those who have reached the finals are Glen Hills Primary, in Glen Parva.

Caroline Roper, music teacher co-ordinator, said: "We have a choir of nearly 100 pupils at the school, so it was tough to pick the ones to take part.

"The pupils are excited and we have had about 230 parents and children bring in the clippings from the paper since we were mentioned."

From 4.30pm tomorrow, readers will be able to click on to our website to see the finalists.
