350 mark Bangladesh's independence
Leicester: About 350 people gathered at the Medway Community School to celebrate the 38th anniversary of Bangladesh gaining its independence.
Hosts Mintu Rahman and Shaniur Islam Munir welcomed the guests and paid special emphasis to third-generation Bangladeshi children in Leicester.
They outlined the meaning of independence for Bangladeshis and paid homage to the martyrs, freedom fighters and the three million who gave their lives in the struggle for independence.
They thanked Mansur Ahmed, Mokthar Hussain, Rafiqul, Wahidul, Mitu, Khalid Mia, Oyes and others for helping to make the event successful.
The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Manjula Sood said: "When I heard that this event was targeted towards the children, I had to attend."
Mrs Sood, a former teacher, said she was delighted to see so many people celebrating the day and thanked the language school teachers and the organisers event and praised them children's for their lovely poem recitation and cultural show.
The community thanked her for attending events such as these which are important to Leicester as a whole.
The Bangladeshi national anthem was sung and a minute's silence was observed.
Refreshments were served and children were presented with goody bags by the Lord Mayor.
