A pub has suffered massive damage in a blaze that broke out last night.

The Kettleby Cross in Wilton Road, Melton, caught fire just before 10pm.

More than 70 customers were evacuated from the building when the fire broke out in the first floor of the pub.

No-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.

The Wetherspoon's pub roof was destroyed and there was severe damage to the first floor.

More than 50 firefighters were called in to tackle the blaze this at its peak.

It was extinguished by 7.30am today and building inspectors had been called in to check the structure.

Dave King, fire brigade watch manager, said the cause of the blaze is still being investigated.

Wetherspoon's spokesman Eddie Gershon added: "At this point it is unclear how and where the fire started but the duty manager has suggested that it may have come from the chimney, possibly a fire within the chimney stack or chimney extractor fan."
