What a coincidence that Sheri Newby's letter against hunting and repealing the Act ("This would be a backward step", Mailbox, July 19) was published on the same day as it was reported that two employees of a hunt face prosecution for "alleged offences".

I agree with Sheri that this archaic, barbaric "sport" should remain in the past.

Legalising hunting again would hardly be in keeping with what we are told is a forward-looking, modern Conservative party.

Any debate on the Hunting Act should be to close any loopholes and ensure that the law is enforced rather than consider its repeal.

A previous attempt to overturn the Hunting Act was thrown out by the Law Lords. Lord Bingham observed that the Hunting Act of 2004 must "be taken to reflect the conscience of a majority of the nation".

“If we are to introduce legislation that is to "be taken to reflect the conscience of a majority of the nation"
then why has not hanging been re-introduced and of course the current banning of the face veil etc.
My query is if a vote has not been taken (in a democratic society) how do they know if it is the wish of the majority of the nation?”

“Didn't I say some time back we hadn't heard the last of this despicable Bill introduced by New Labour as an act of so-called "populism", or so Blair thought?!!”
