Noisy speed humps which sound like "artillery going off" when cars drive over them could be quietened down after complaints from residents.

Highways engineers are looking at whether to inject special resin into the humps in Rosemead Drive in Oadby in an effort to tackle the problem.

But people living along the road said they would not stop campaigning until the speed bumps have been removed altogether.

Chris Levett, 68, who lives in Rosemead Drive, said: "We won't stop until they're gone.

"The council have said they'll inject a kind of resin into the base to stop them bouncing, but people aren't convinced. The humps also damage cars, so people are driving around them and mounting the pavement which is very dangerous.

"I'm not against speed calming – quite the opposite in fact – but we need something which both the council and the residents agree upon."

Mrs Levett described the sound of cars being driven over the speed bumps as "like living near a firing range".

Her husband Dave, 62, said the concrete speed humps had damaged his car.

He said: "I've had to take my car to the garage on numerous occasions for things like tyre wear and broken springs – all a result of the humps."

The speed bumps were installed in February 2009 but many were put in incorrectly and rock or vibrate when vehicles drive over them. Just months later, more than 360 people signed a petition calling for them to be removed.

A survey carried out by council officers found a number of defects in the concrete cushions including three with hairline cracks and eight with suspected foundation problems.

Campaigners, politicians and highways engineers met on Thursday last week to discuss the problem.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire County Council said that highways officers were "still considering their options" on how to tackle the problem. One plan was to inject a resin underneath the humps to help dampen the sound.

Oadby ward councillor Bill Boulter said: "It's a nuisance for the people who live in the area – every time a vehicle goes over the speed bump it reverberates in their homes.

"Drivers too are against it, saying that the humps damage their cars.

"If the council is thinking of replacing them then I would suggest installing the speed signs, which tell you how fast you're going."

The authority insists that the problem does not affect driver safety.

“Speed humps should be banned, they are nothing but inverted potholes installed by clueless councils pandering to political correctness.”

“I have a low down car z3, and there is no way i can avoid these bumps and everytime i go over them at snails pace they catch the underneath of my car and has caused damage. GET RID!! Put your brain cells together and put in speed humps similar to the ones tht lead into the parklands gym!! At end of the day i have seen cars and buses fly over the speed humps on rosemead at more than 30mph buses more so than cars. These bumps are not slowing anyone down as they place there wheels either side and go over just as quick”

“Simple solution, get a bike then you can ride round em and keep fit too. Then all the money you save on garage repairs you can use to hire a solicitor and sue the pratt that installed em...seemples”

“These humps have caused enough damage to my suspension in which the peugeot garage gets my service! I cant hear the noise because im in my car probably, the speed reducing bumps are their for a good reason. I wouldnt mind if they made them a bit smaller...or just did one big bump across the road, rather than 3 seperate (like the one right near the shops) because they wont make noise.”

“Hello! what are speed bumps for? Set up a camera and fine all the speeders.Do that for 1month and I bet they won't speed over them again. The city wastes all this money putting these things in but don't follow through enforcing the law. It's a joke.”

“GET A LIFE!!! It just goes to show that the residents of Rosemaed Drive have nothing better to do than complain about something WHICH HAS BEEN PROVEN TO REDUCE SPEED AND SAVE LIVES!!

I travel through Evington Village 4 times a day 7 days a week, I have done this for the past 3 years, which involves driving over similar speed humps to those installed on Rosemead Drive, if driven over at a gentle speed, they DO NOT damage suspension systems on vehicles, if that was the case then I would have had to a serious amount of repairs done to my own vehicle, which of course I have not!!

Wake up Rosemead Drive residents, and stop complaining and moaning about something so small.

I do not believe for one second that it sounds like "Artillary Gun Fire" when vehicles drive over the humps.”

“I am all for speed humps i make a fortune repairing cars damaged on these things. In the last 5 years most cars coming in for MOT have suspension damage, tyre wear or some similar fault”
