More than £2.8 million is to be spend increasing the number of emergency ambulance staff.

East Midlands Ambulance (Emas) Service is taking on 140 emergency care assistants to support paramedics

Thirty-four emergency care assistants have already started work.

They will cover the area from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire through to the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

More clinical assessors are also being taken on to take the number in the control rooms in Lincoln and Nottingham to 29.

In addition, £1.2 million is being spent on replacing or upgrading 55 vehicles.

Managers said the extra staff would help them respond to more call more quickly.

Phil Milligan, Emas chief executive, said: "Demand is greater that ever before so we are working within the funds available to us to ensure we have the right people and resources in place to respond to calls quickly and appropriately.

"These developments support our aim to deliver and modern and fit-for-purpose service."
