Danny Ashington and Stu Naylor dominated the opening match in the Sensas Winter Pairs series.

The first of four contests was fished on the Loughborough Canal with Ashington and Naylor ensuring they finished as the leading pair by taking the top two weights.

Ashington caught 12lb 5oz from the Halls Plant Hire section and Naylor 11-14.

It was an outstanding achievement because the competition ran to more than 100 pegs. Tony Barker was third in the individual section, some late roach taking him to 10-14.

Mark Parker and Darren Crosby were runners-up in the pairs competition on nine points, and there was a tie on 10 between Rob Wootton and Tom Pringle, and Steve Woolhard and Darren Bickerton.

Steve Oakes was a runaway winner of Wigston Angling Society's Mick Holohan Memorial Open. He drew an unfancied swim along the factory wall on the canalised section of the River Soar at Aylestone.

He fished bread punch down the middle for a net of small roach weighing 4-9. Steve Wyles was runner-up on 3-3 and Pete Wootton third on 2-14.

The Wigston pairs and individual winter league on the Grand Union Canal starts on Sunday, January 22.

Carl Hitchcock won Sunday's open at Lakeview Fishery, Holwell.

He caught 58-10 from peg 23 on serpent pool to beat fellow Leicestershire angler Andy Searle, 45-0.

Lutterworth's Adam Staff has set a lake record on the boys pit at Celtic Lakes Fishery, Frisby.

He caught a huge 28lb 2oz pike on a lure.

Staff said: "I had been fishing on dead baits on the sailing lake but, after only one small fish, I decided on having a go with the lure. I'm glad I did."
