I am pleased to see that the Government is finally planning to put a stop to the testing of household products – bleach, furniture polish and washing up liquid – on animals.

Cosmetic testing on animals has been illegal since 2008.

Very often animals are given toxic doses of chemicals. The move is not before time – animals still have feelings. There is no excuse for testing household products on animals.

Hopefully, the Government will add a condition to the 1986 Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act to stop this cruel practice as soon as possible.

There is no reason animals have to suffer horrendous pain and even death so we can have a new washing up liquid or air freshener.

In the last decade scientific and medical experiments have risen by over one million. This is due mainly because of genetically modified mice and fish for medical research.

These tests can be carried out on laboratory grown cell cultures or by computer modelling.
