Argos depot staff on strike at Magna Park, Lutterworth, over pensions
Hundreds of workers have gone on strike at a retail depot in a row over pensions.
Argos is closing its final salary pension scheme and the Unite union said new employees would be up to 10 per cent worse off in retirement.
-

The strike, at Argos's national depot at Magna Park, Lutterworth, began yesterday and will continue for five days.
The company said no stores would be affected. Between 250 and 300 depot staff – out of a workforce of about 450 – are on strike.

Unite organiser Paresh Patel said: "The current pension plan is being closed to new members and there's a new scheme that the company says is more affordable.
"Unite believes there are ways to keep the current scheme in place with some compromises but the company has rejected our ideas.
"The outcome will vary for new employees depending on their earnings but they'll be about 10 per cent worse off."
A spokeswoman for Argos's parent company, Home Retail Group, said: "Despite only 30 per cent of union members voting in favour of industrial action, Unite has decided to proceed with strike action."

“Workers need to see all the angles before they consider strike action.
For starters, their jobs are secured by making profits, companies are not a bottomless pit of money and their job with the company are a privilege not a right!
Consumers are demanding ever lower prices on everything they buy.....this in turn, puts pressure on companies to keep prices down, this snowballs into ever decreasing profits from which wages and pension contributions are paid from.
So, workers, ask yourselves the question..........when you are making demands on the company you work for, are you fully understanding that there is a limited pot of cash you are demanding from? Are you one of those shoppers that is constantly trying to get the cheapest..........if so, then YOU are part of the reason that companies can't afford the generosity you expect from them...........live with it! or fight on and drain the company so dry that they can't afford to employ you or your colleagues in the future.”

“What Argos is not telling is that they have threatened their staff with cancelling current contract and replacing with a worse contract if they do not agree to cancelling final salary scheme term in contract, when it states that the company would, if removing the final salary, replace it with an equivilent or better scheme. If they are allowed to do this then they could change whatever they wanted to in the future.”

“My views are not about the rights & wrongs of unions - as I do believe in & support Unions
But there are times in any negotiation when it is not working and individuals have to step back - as fresh faces and a different approach can assist - sometimes.
As the workers are not themselves in the discussions, it is the job of the union representatives to negotiate suitable positions that do not require strike and the knock effects that that brings”

“If what Peter says is correct, it just goes to show how useless trade unions can be. I requested some help from my union a while back and the answer I got from the so called "helpdesk" was rather rude and abrupt to say the least. Argos though isnt the only company to try to do this.”

“This strike action seems to be the failure of the union representatives to be able to do their job.
If the union is representing its members, then they need to find ways to negotiate and reach an agreement, which if the individuals cannot do, then the union needs to replace them with other individuals.
A strike risks jobs as it costs money to everyonw involved and also if there is no effect on service to stores & customers, then shows an accountant a possible efficiency saving
This is a worrying development for all employed at Argos Magna park”

“I reckon they've done well to keep a final salary scheme going for this long considering the number of these schemes that have ended over recent years. It's a fact of life that companies can no longer afford to run them so be grateful if you joined Argos before it ended.”
