No members of staff or customers were injured, police said.
Detective Sergeant Simon Head said: “Investigations into this incident are in their early stages.
“At this stage I would like to appeal for anyone who was in the area at around 1.40pm today and saw a man in dark clothing to come forward and speak to police.
“The Gipsy Lane area is usually fairly busy throughout the day with both pedestrians and traffic.
“Maybe you were passing through and saw someone acting suspiciously.
“You may not have thought anything of it at the time, but it could be vital to our investigation.”
