In a statement, Nottinghamshire Police said the five were being questioned on suspicion of child abduction and sexual activity with children.
It is alleged the girls – three aged 14 and one aged 15 – were assaulted in four separate incidents in July.
The men are suspected of having travelled from Leicester to Newark and then took the girls to addresses in Leicestershire, where it is alleged the assaults took place.
The five men are being questioned on suspicion of child abduction, while two of them are being quizzed on suspicion of serious sexual assault.
The 17-year-old boy and four men – two aged 18, one aged 20 and one aged 23 – were taken into custody in Nottinghamshire.
They were due to be interviewed by detectives last night.
