Athletics: Leicester pair strike Midlands Winter League gold
Leicester walkers struck a golden double in the second Midlands Winter League match at Perry Barr Stadium, Birmingham.
Emma Achurch beat her personal best by four seconds on Saturday to win the under-15s girls 3k in 17 minutes flat, while Jasmine Nicholls smashed her pb by 45 seconds to win the under-17 girls 5k in 28.42.
Sarah Lightman was seventh in the women's 5k in 32.23.
There were a couple of top-10 finishes in the men's 5k with Colin Vesty taking fifth (29.36) and Hardeep Minhas coming home in ninth (31.30).
In the 10k race, Thomas Taylor, who lives in Leicester but walks for Birchfield, won with a season's best time of 44.41.
Chris Berwick was third in 56.57, seventh was Paul Hayden – who lives in Hinckley but walks for Nuneaton – in 62.52, eighth was Minhas in 63.38, and ninth was Vesty in 64.56.
In the team events, Leicester won the mixed handicap 5k in 56 minutes, and also triumphed in the mixed handicap 10k in 120.31.
Coventry club Sphinx AC are hoping to attract some Leicestershire runners to their tough eight-mile multi-terrain race at Coombe Country Park on Sunday, November 22 (10.0).
Entry is £8.50 for club runners, £10.50 for non-club runners, with an extra £1.50 for entry on the day. There are prizes on offer and long-sleeve T-shirts will be given to all finishers.
