Athletics: Mark Wiseman wins gold at European Masters Championship
Leicester field-eventer Mark Wiseman took throwing pentathlon gold at the European Masters Championship in Hungary.
But it was a close-run thing for the 41-year-old Army staff sergeant, who won by just seven points in fierce competition.
The event was held 20 miles from the Russian border at Nyireghaza.
Wiseman took the gold with 3,999pts for the five events of hammer, shot putt, discus, javelin and weights throw.
Wiseman's scores: HT: 73m (727pts), SP: 15m (894), DT: 49.68m (969), JT: 43.74m (552) and WT: 15.72m (857).
The silver medal went to Norway's Iver Hytten with 3,992pts, and the bronze went to Otto Benczenleitner (Hungary) with 3,986.
Sprinter Alan Mellett also claimed two bronze medals at the championships. The Leicester veteran competes at M70 level.
He was third in the 100m in 14.96 and took the same finishing position in the 200m in 30.52.
As previously reported in the Mercury, Nicki Nealon won the F40 10,000 metres in 37min 36.16sec. Nealon was fifth in the 5,000m in 18.16.15.
Bill Foster, of Loughborough, was fifth overall in the M50 5,000m in 16.42.
Leicester's John Haywood was 28th overall in the M60 5,000m in 23.17 – but questioned the decision to run the event at midday in temperatures approaching 40 degrees centigrade.
