Daniel Watling and Jasmine Nicholls got off to a flying start in the first round of the Chris Smith race walking league.

The pair both completed the 2km course in under 10 minutes, with Watling (Codsall Community High School, Staffs) finishing in 9min 40sec in the boys' race and Nicholls (South Leicestershire College) registering 9.59 in the girls' event.

Matt Redfern (William Allitt, Swadlincote) was second behind Watling, while Countesthorpe College's Emma Achurch finished third behind Nicholls in 10.39.

George Smolinski has been crowned the winner of Leicester Walking Club's 80th Topham Cup.

The 60-year-old was first across the line in the seven-mile handicap race in a time of 72min 40sec.

Sarah Lightman, also of Leicester Walking Club, was second in 78.30.

Chris Berwick completed the club's top three as he third in 72.25, and Alan King (Roadhoggs) was fourth in 85.25.
