Athletics: Record numbers of County Cross-Country League
More than 3,000 youngsters have competed in the first two rounds of the biggest primary schools cross-country league in the country.
The Leicestershire League, returning to Prestwold Hall, near Barrow upon Soar for its second year, has witnessed a record number of competitors so far.
In the second meeting, five out of the eight opening-day winners repeated their success.
Mackenzie Smith (Elizabeth Woodville) and Freddie Mcgrady (Frisby) again led home the Year 3 girls' and boys' fields respectively.

Madeleine Mayes (Hallaton) moved up to second from her third-place debut last time out, while Lachlan Finch (Huncote) notched his second consecutive runner-up slot.
In a competitive Year 4 girls' race, Carys O'Reilly (St Peters, Hinckley) beat Katie Parker (Lady Jane Grey) with Flora Miskin-Young (Queniborough) in third.
Ben Jones (Mercenfeld) won his first league race in the Year 4 boys' section.
He leads the corresponding boys' standings and will be doing his best to add league gold to the County Championship trophy he won earlier this year.
An exciting finish is guaranteed going into the final race of the Year 5 girls' series. Victory for Rachel Nealon (Elizabeth Woodville) means she is tied with Maisie Elliott (Burbage) at the top of the league.
The corresponding boys' race resulted in a repeat of the top three from the first meeting as Roman Watson-Quilter (Martinshaw) maintained his good form ahead of his brother Lucca, and Andrew Jones (Fairfield Prep).
Both Year 6 races were won by young athletes who tasted success last month.
Mia Atkinson (Fairfield Prep) and Morgan Enoux (The Hall School) made it two wins out of two in the girls' and boys' races respectively and will be looking to end their primary school cross-country league careers with a hat-trick of wins and a coveted league title.
The third and final meeting of the series, again at Prestwold Hall, takes place on Saturday. December 1. Top-three placings:
