Attack on our traditions
So Mr Hannah (Mailbox, February 10) thinks hunting will be a vote loser for the Conservatives.
As they are allowing commonsense to prevail on this matter, I think it could be a vote winner.
The one sure thing we can agree on is that New Labour is leading this country "to hell on a handcart" – and only a change of Government will reverse that situation.
I am not at all interested in the fox nor the people who gallop across fields, endangering their own lives, in pursuit of the uneatable. What I am concerned about are the disappearing traditions of this nation, built up over centuries and what has made us what we are today.
New Labour has been obsessed with change for the sake of change since 1997 and just look at where this policy has got us. They have chosen to interfere with the lives of thousands who engage in this tradition. What right has this Government, which is here only for a relatively short period of time, got to change that?
Putting aside the emotive language of the antis, just how many folk have witnessed the killing of a fox by hounds – in truth, a minute proportion of the population, yet it is portrayed as being "barbaric".
Utter nonsense! Just as it is the natural instinct of the fox to kill whatever it likes, it is equally natural for a hound to do the same in this environment.
I also suggest many who hunt have never witnessed a "kill". It has already been established that very few foxes are killed by hounds, so what is so important about the fox that this Government decided to waste so much parliamentary time on outlawing this tradition when there are so many more important issues that need addressing and have not been addressed in 13 years?
The reaction to this vindictive piece of legislation will not go away and simply disappear just because you, Mr Hannah, think it a vote loser.

“I'm not going to be dragged into other unrelated issues that have no bearing on this pernicious act brought in by a populist party who are now in thth dying embers of their reign, thank God!!
The antis still continue to use emotive language in silly rants to promote their point of view, but that is all it is a point of view to which we are all entitled.”

“What kind of sad losers take part in Fox hunting? Really, what kind of thrill can you possible get from killing a poor defenceless animal? I say lets get a group of angry, starving dobermans and go hunt the people who hunt these foxes!! I tell you what, if they ever allow that game/sport/nonsense then i'll be at the head of the queue!!”

“Thank goodness we have intelligent sensible replies to the latest rant from David. Enough already David - you're not convincing anyone with your tired old arguments. Oh and in relation to "The one sure thing we can agree on is that New Labour is leading this country "to hell on a handcart" - everybody? Not this body actually, please don't presume to know the thoughts or voting intentions of the electorate, that is just the sort of arrogance that the Tories are renowned for - and it's 'bitten them on the bottom' on more than one occasion.”

“Great idea David, let¿s bring back some more traditions. How about bear baiting or bull baiting? We could also include cock fighting and dog fighting. But why should animals have all of the fun? Bring back good old tradition of child labour, it seems to be very popular in some other countries. What about expulsion of the Jews or the persecution of Catholics? All of these were fine traditions at some point in this county¿s history and legislation by one interfering government or another has outlawed them. Disgraceful.”

“Following your logic could be an arguement to bring back Hanging... This too could be a vote winner, and it too is part of the 'tradition' you appear to favour. The disengaged always preached to the trapped!”
