A journalism student has been presented with an award recognising her dedication, hard work and promise as a young roaming reporter.

Natalie Robinson, 20, was named Leicester Mercury District Reporter of the Year.

It follows four-months of hectic news gathering which saw Natalie and 15 fellow third-year De Montfort University journalism students scour the city for scoops.

Natalie's work included an interview with a young patient being treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary's new Teenage Cancer Trust unit and an article on the city's Critical Mass cycling campaign.

Trainees gathered at the university's Leicester Centre for Journalism, yesterday, to see Natalie unveiled as winner.

"Reporting is something I really enjoy," she said. "But to be recognised by experienced journalists who have been in the profession for many years makes me feel very happy indeed."

Mercury editor Richard Bettsworth presented Natalie with her certificate and a cheque for £100.
