A man who robbed a bank earlier this week threatened staff with a firearm, police have confirmed.

The man escaped from a branch of Santander, in Woodgate, near Leicester city centre, with an undisclosed amount of cash at 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Police said yesterday that the man was armed with a handgun but it was not clear whether it was real or a replica.

Officers also confirmed customers were inside the bank at the time.

Detective Constable Michelle Bigg said: "This was a very distressing incident for the staff and customers in the branch.

"From inquiries we've conducted, we believe the suspect made off on foot along Balfour Street towards Rally Park and may have dropped a small quantity of cash just outside the premises.

"If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area prior to the incident, or you witnessed the suspect running away, we would urge you to contact us."

The suspect was about 5ft 8in and was wearing a black hooded top with the hood pulled up over his head.

Bank staff have also told police the man was wearing glasses and had a stubbly face but they could not be sure of his ethnicity.
