Bar aims to work its magic in hunt for most welcoming venue for families
Voting starts today in our hunt for the city pub that is most welcoming to families.
Readers can vote online to choose between the 13 nominees, which all think they have what it takes to be named the 2010 Best Bar None winner in the family friendly category.
It is the third year running that the Leicester Mercury has sponsored the award, which was won by The Quarter, in Halford Street, in the Cultural Quarter, last year, and by Jungle Club, in Belgrave, the year before. Both those venues are competing again this year.
Others in the running include The Almanack, which opened in November last year at Highcross Leicester.
Almanack manager Adrian Butcher said: "We have children's menus here as well as books and games such as Jenga and Twister upstairs, too.
"We get a lot of families with children – there are often lots of pushchairs around the place.
"I'm a father of four, so I wouldn't have it any other way.
"On Sundays, we have magicians in to entertain the children and more than half our customers at weekends are families .
"Rather than have a special children's area, we like to make it so they're welcome to run around anywhere they want."
The Best Bar None awards are only open to bars in the city centre and certain other central areas of Leicester. The awards recognise pubs that work to keep customers, and the city centre in general, safe.
At the awards night on Tuesday, June 8, venues that have applied to Leicester City Council for Best Bar None accreditation and passed the judges' test will receive their certificates.
Bobby Smiljanic, the city council's licensing manager, said the awards were improving standards.
She said: "Despite difficult times in the industry, we have had a fantastic response with Best Bar None applications, with some premises applying for the first time. All accreditations have been completed and this year it's going to be closer than ever."
She said a similar scheme could be introduced for off-licences to further promote responsible drinking.
