Basketball: Cameron Rundles clinches dramatic win for Leicester Riders
Cameron Rundles fired Leicester Riders to a dramatic 99-96 victory at Milton Keynes Lions last night.
Rundles scored two three-pointers in the final minute to give the Jelson Homes DMU-backed squad the edge in a thrilling contest.
The scoring was frenetic with the two evenly-matched teams trading baskets throughout.
Rundles, whose decisive score came with 4.7 seconds left, was the star of the show for Riders with 30 points.
Riders made the first two scores of the night, through Ayron Hardy and Bradd Wierzbicki, and they had the better of things in the early stages, edging 15-13 ahead.
But a Stefan Gill three-pointer put Lions in front for the first time at 16-15.
The home side continued to hold the advantage to the end of the first quarter when they led 29-27.
Lions threatened to get away when they built a 48-39 lead in the second quarter.
But, with Hardy and Wierzbicki both on the mark from the free-throw line, Riders were only 56-51 adrift at the interval.
Riders' fightback continued in the second half and Brett Royster fired them back into the lead at 61-60.
But the advantage was only shortlived because Demarius Bolds, who was in impressive shooting form, connected with a three-pointer as Lions led 75-73 at the end of the third quarter.
However, Barry Lamble put Riders level before two consecutive Wierzbicki baskets and a Rundles three-pointer gave Riders an 82-75 advantage.
Bolds, who finished with 39 points, continued to be a danger and he connected with a three-pointer to put Lions back in front at 89-86.
Wierzbicki replied in kind to level at 91-91.
Bolds put Lions 96-93 ahead before Rundles had the final word to clinch victory for Riders.
This was Riders' 12th win from 15 BBL Championship fixtures this season and coach Rob Paternostro's squad look well placed to challenge for honours. It helps that three of their next four games are at home, starting with the visit of Glasgow Rocks a week today.
The John Sandford Sports Centre crowd always provide tremendous backing for the side and, in this sort of form, they will be hoping to consolidate their challenge.
