Basketball: Leicester Riders aim to turn in another Capital show
Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders look to continue their excellent run of form tonight with the visit of struggling London Capital (7.30).
Riders have won seven of their last nine games and they have not been beaten at John Sandford Sports Centre for the best part of two months. Indeed, Riders are looking for a sixth consecutive home win, a feat they have not achieved for nine years.
"When I got the job I felt it was vital to make our home court a very difficult place to come to and I think over the last two years we've done that," said coach Rob Paternostro. "I don't think anyone comes to Leicester and expects an easy time, so it's good to see that we are putting streaks like that together."
There will be few backing against Riders extending the run, especially given the last meeting between the sides ended in a top-flight record 72-point win for Leicester.
"That won't happen again, that's for sure," said Paternostro, who also does not think complacency will be a problem for his side. "We have a squad who are all hungry, so any player on the court knows there are four others ready to come out and play. If you don't turn up on the night, there are guys on the bench who are ready to come in."
Of course, Riders found out to their cost that, on their day, London are capable of causing a surprise, having been beat 85-82 in the capital in October.
That was during a stuttering start to the campaign, however, and seems a world away from the form Riders find themselves in now.
Victory tonight would be their 17th of the campaign and would really put the pressure on the chasing pack in the race for the fourth home play-off berth.
Paternostro said: "We feel good right now, there is a good mood in the team and winning certainly has a lot to do with that. This part of our schedule has a lot of home games in it, but to be successful in this league you've got to take advantage of that and we have.
"At this time of year, perhaps the most important thing for me, besides winning, is to see yourself improving and I've seen that. Looking back to early January compared to now, there has certainly been an improvement and the important thing for us game by game, week by week is to keep that going."
