Bath lining up swoop for Leicester Tigers' Sam Vesty
Bath are planning another raid on Leicester Tigers' ranks by trying to tempt fly-half Sam Vesty away from Welford Road.
Tigers' West Country rivals sprang a huge surprise on Friday by announcing the signing of flanker Lewis Moody to end his 14-year association with the club.
Now Vesty, who has been with Tigers for eight years, is firmly on their radar.
The 28-year-old has seen limited first-team action since returning to fitness following a hamstring injury that meant he missed the first four months of the season.
He is out of contract in the summer and I understand that Bath are making big moves to try to secure his services next season, competing with interest from France.
Butch James runs the show at fly-half for Steve Meehan's men but there is some confusion over his future at The Rec.
Bath said that their South African play-maker would remain at the club to see out a contract which runs until June 2012.
But the 31-year-old has made no secret of his desire to represent his country again and he has been linked with a move home in time to try to win a place in the Springboks' 2011 World Cup squad.
Bath chief executive Nick Blofeld has admitted James has been the subject of an approach from his former club Natal Sharks, and press reports have also suggested that Cape Town-based Super 14 outfit The Stormers are also interested in him.
If James does leave the club, Bath will be short of fly-halves with Nicky Little departing at the end of the season to join Bristol.
That will leave only inexperienced Ryan Davis in their ranks.
Vesty would be an ideal fit for Meehan's side. As well as playing fly-half, the versatile Leicester-born back can also play at inside-centre.

“Sam Vesty should be first team choice as fly half -Staunton has done nothing since his arrival - I have followed Vesty's progress through the ranks or lack of it for three- four seasons now and thought what a gutsy player he is -don't forget he was the one that rescued Tigers last year -forced to play in developement side while we had S African and Argentinean so called managers and Cockers has not played him enough this season- wake up managment we'll be loosing Billy Twelvetrees, then George Ford ,Ben Youngs etc next if you are not carefull . Let Tuilagi go instead on his performance this season ( last week was the only game this season when he hasn't dropped passes and knocked on ).Give him an airline ticket home. Forget builing any more stands lets see some more entertaining rugby with the likes of Vesty in the side!!”

“John, you're missing the point. It's Jeremy Staunton who should be released. Of course George Ford should be developed and encouraged, but he'll progress far quicker playing with Vesty rather than Staunton”

“Although it will be sad to see Sam go to Bath he has not regained the form he had at the end of last season. His performances at the A team games has been very disappointing and George Ford has been much more reliable. We can't keep everyone and a it is essential that we give a young rising star like George every encouragement. Ben Youngs has shown how youngsters will develop when they are given a chance. A club cannot live on sentiment if we are to keep at the top.”

“He would be a welcome addition to the Bath squad . We don't have a stand to pay for, yet !”
