Beacon lit in eco-town protests
A beacon was lit to express anger over the Government's eco-town proposals.
Last night, campaigners held an open-air event to mark the first anniversary of the scheme's conception.
It was a year to the day since Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced the controversial programme to create 10 eco-towns.
The campaign Against the Co-op Stoughton Eco-Town (Cascet) held the event at King's Norton, near the area where the Co-op plans to build 15,000 homes.
There was a band, dance group, food and drinks tent.
The protest coincided with events by five other campaign groups.
Visitors also brought along their own battery torches as a symbol of their support.
Other protests were held in Sussex, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Bedfordshire, where other proposed eco-towns are proposed.

“Forgive me for my lack of support at your protests, but fundamentally this project is to provide new housing for people, when there is currently a lack of housing available in this country. Of those who protest against this development, how many live in houses built in the last 50-60years? Surely at sometime the majority of these houses were just fields, green belt land which you argue that you are trying to protect! Why was building then alright but now not? If your houses and many milloions more had not been built on the outskirts of cities town and villages where would we all be living now? In 60 storey buildings in city centres? I tire of hearing nothing more than NIMBYism ragarding these eco towns. Houseshomes are needed and they need to be built somewhere, accept it and move on!”

“Lighting a beacon? That will show everyone they mean business. Man, that is anger.”
