A Beginner’s Guide to Cruises
Travelling by cruise ship offers holidaymakers a getaway experience unlike any other. Much of this comes from the unique sense of community that you develop with your fellow passengers. Whether you’re setting off on the mega cruise of a lifetime or have just secured last minute cruise deals for you and a friend – here are some tips to give you a head start on some points of onboard etiquette.
What’s the best cruise for you?
From mini cruises to month-long Mediterranean escapes, there’s an abundance of different cruise types available on the market. Some cater more to different groups, with certain ships offering facilities geared towards families, couples, singles or retirees. So whatever your tastes, there’s a getaway to suit every personality.
Dress code varies from ship to ship. It’s worth having a think about what sort of clothes you’ll spend most of the day in, and adjusting your packing accordingly. If you think you’ll spend most of the day in shorts and sandals, then job done! If on the other hand you’re the type who enjoys dressing up, and have chosen a ship where smarter dress is the norm, then pack those dinner suits and evening gowns!
Keep an eye on the kids
All ship ranges provide activities for young and old, but some are particularly specialized at catering for kids. Whether you’re booking in advance, or going for one of the ranges of last minute cruises, it might be worth looking for ships with specialized child friendly facilities and enrichment programs, but be aware family cabins sell out quickly!
Try not to miss the ‘boat’
If you’re on a day visit, it’s worth making a note on when the ship’s leaving. With so many iconic locations to visit, it’s maybe not surprising that some people get so engrossed that they forget the departure time!
Enjoy the friendly atmosphere
One of the greatest things about cruise holidays is the opportunity to meet like-minded people and enjoy the incredible experience together. At meal times and during onboard activities, you have the opportunity to bond with a range of people, so make the most of it!
