A firm which supplies food packaging for major supermarkets has seen annual profits soar by two-thirds.

The rise came despite another loss-making year for the group's pharmaceutical packaging arm.
Bosses put the success down to the growth of its food packaging division, which is the core part of the business.

Benson, which employs about 900 staff, is one of the UK's largest manufacturers of printed folding carton and sleeve packaging. It operates from its 130,000sq ft head office in Bardon, with manufacturing sites in Newcastle, Gateshead and Crewe.
Turnover rose from £108.2 million to £111.3 million in the 12 months.
Managing director Mark Kerridge said the success achieved over the past decade was on the back of investment and a series of acquisitions.
The Benson group had a management buyout backed by private equity firm LDC in December 2011. Mr Kerridge and commercial director Nick Benson led the buyout.
