Biased views of veggies

Am I missing something or is Elizabeth Allison ("Unrepentant veggie", Mailbox, April 17) the only vegetarian to have so much space devoted to her outpourings?

Very few others have had articles published. It is becoming a very sad newspaper when someone who writes a factually correct and very informative letter, such as Mr Watson, is then responded to in such a small-minded and biased way by Elizabeth Allison.

Over many years, I have read many articles giving various viewpoints about whether we are supposed to be vegetarian or omnivore by nature and as far as I have been able to ascertain there is undeniable internationally scientifically accepted proof that we, by our very nature and physiology, are meant to be omnivores.

To be a vegetarian, vegan or whatever other non-meat eating path they choose is a personal choice but that does not give any vegetarian the right to belittle any person whose viewpoint is in contradiction to theirs.

It is time that the Mercury stopped this page being used as a soapbox platform for a very small minority whose only goal in life appears to be to make everyone change their lives to a style that they support – a vegetarian one.

Oh, yes, before I forget, it is because we are at the top of the food chain that we are free to choose how we eat, and what – just as all other animals, including the dinosaurs did when they were at the top of it!

In closing, let me make you aware that if you think that you do not kill anything, Elizabeth, you do every time you move and even breathe! Or do the smaller living things we share the world with not count in your eyes?

Martin Baker, Leicester.
