Biblical Christianity has been the bedrock of our culture and law
The amendment to the Government Bill on Sex and Relationship Education is not so much a case of a religious takeover, as Allan Hayes would try and have us believe (Mailbox, March 1), but an attempt to curtail the rise of aggressive secularism by this Government.
Since Roman times the education system in this country has been grounded entirely in Biblical Christianity and has largely been the envy of the world. From the early days of Oxford University – motto: "Dominus illuminatio mea" (The Lord is my light) – in the 11th century, education has been provided by the Church in one form or another.
The state first began to provide some degree of statutory education in the 19th century, and even now the 1944 Education Act still requires that all state and church schools offer a daily act of worship of a broadly Christian nature.
Mr Hayes seems not to be aware of the magnificent history of Christian education in this country and the enormous debt owed to it by society in this country and where our influence has spread abroad.
Biblical Christianity has been the bedrock of our culture, our laws and our language. Our educational heritage is unashamedly Christian. Since the quote at the weekend from the Environment Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, we now have the first Government that openly supports secularism.
Mr Hayes may find a few people who suggest that to be an improvement, but he is deluded in accusing those of us who resist this change of direction of a religious takeover.

“John surely in this day & age it's those who believe in Biblical Christianity who are deluded. Back in the 11th century no one knew much other than the church ruled, now things have changed, people are not afraid of religion & it's threats of hell etc.
Maybe we should start burning witches again too?”
