Boxing: Omar Kalik powers into ABA novice quarter-finals
Omar Kalik booked his place in the last eight of the ABA Novice championships after showing off his skills to the nation's fight fans.
ITV cameras filmed the Leicester teenager training at the opening of Barry McGuigan's Boxing Academy at South Leicestershire College and, the day after the footage was shown, Kalik outpointed Nathan French (St Pauls) at Retford Town Hall.
That win takes him through to the quarter-finals in Manchester tomorrow.
Kalik, another top prospect from Earl Shilton ABC's gym, took early charge of his latest Class B welterweight championship contest against French.
After thee rounds, he had opened up a 6-1 lead and the last session was messy with both boxers picking up warnings.
The fight ended with Kalik in charge and, at the final bell, he was 12-5 ahead.
Sam "Bullet" Bowen chalked up another outstanding win for the club.
Bowen, last season's Junior ABA champion and an England international, was paired with Shafiq Asif in Middlesbrough.
Asif (South Bank) is a top-class performer having won a pair of Junior ABA titles, two NACYP titles and gold in the Four Nations.
He has also controversially outpointed Bowen in the Junior ABA semi-finals two yars ago but the 17-year-old from Ashby never let him into their rematch at 60ks.
Bowen soon took charge and he stayed ahead until the final bell.
