Boy denies causing death of eight-year-old passenger in Gipsy Lane, Leicester

A 16-year-old boy accused of causing the death of an eight-year-old passenger in a car crash appeared in court yesterday.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of a court order, denied the aggravated vehicle taking of a Smart car.

The car hit a telegraph pole, resulting in the death of Abhay Jadeja, who was in the back.

The tragedy happened in Gipsy Lane, Belgrave, Leicester, at 10.50pm on July 3.

The juvenile, from Leicester, also denied associated offences of causing the eight-year-old's death by careless driving and causing death while driving without a valid licence and insurance.

Defence counsel Andrew Fryman said during the 10-minute plea and case management hearing at Leicester Crown Court: "The whole case is an utter tragedy."

Judge Michael Pert adjourned the proceedings for a three-day trial to commence on August 5.

The teenager was released on bail.
