Volunteers are looking for more people to help them clean up banks by the Willow Brook, in Leicester.

Litter picks are being organised on Tuesdays until the end of March to remove plastic bags, discarded drink cans and other debris from the banks of the brook, known locally as The Morsey.

Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire is working with the Environment Agency to cut the amount of debris finding its way into the Grand Union Canal and River Soar by intercepting it in the Willow Brook.

Ian Underwood, project leader for Groundwork, said: "The brook is an important waterway.

"There is so much litter in it, on its stretch from Catherine Street to the Grand Union Canal, but its origins are mostly upstream. If we can intercept it here, with the help of volunteers, we can improve the environment for residents and make a major difference to the aquatic environment."

Elaine Simpson, a volunteer who helped on Tuesday, said: "It's good to see some work being done at last to clean up The Morsey."

“I think a great idea and welcomed.Cannot do it myself, but wish them well.Maybe get the council to get rid of the graffiti. One thing to remember/recall is that any property backing onto the brook is required to maintain it.That includes houses, flats and businesses. It is known as Ruparian Rights and is a statutary right. So get the council to get some money towards this community effort.
For me,in olden days,I have walked, paddled in me wellies, from Spinney Hill through the tunnel and down to Belgrave Road. Before the roundabout was built we would go down the brook sitting on old tyres to the canal.
