He admitted burgling the bungalow and theft of the householder's car and other possessions, on June 26 last year.

The occupants were away on holiday when he broke in at night.

Alan Murphy, prosecuting, said the defendant unsuccessfully attempted to prise open the patio doors, causing damage, but entered via a bathroom window.

Numerous items were taken including two televisions, a digital photo frame and a vacuum cleaner, totalling £1,100.

A wedding ring and a diamond ring, for which no value was given, were also stolen, along with credit cards.

Mr Murphy said the stolen Peugeot was recovered undamaged several days later.

When arrested, Clelland of Gwendolen Road, North Evington, Leicester, denied any involvement.

The court heard he had a record of numerous previous convictions, including burglaries.

Philip Bown, mitigating, said Clelland was desperate to pay off debts at the time.

"He had accrued a drugs debt, which he was under pressure to repay, and had rental arrears," said Mr Bown.

The recorder, Sue Carr, said the offence was aggravated by Clelland's "appalling" criminal record.
