Busy month for WI members
Coleorton: March was a busy time for Coleorton Women's Institute: It was Coleorton's turn to host the group meeting this year. Mrs J Harris joined was present as the representative of the County Federation and Mrs J Henderson entertained with her comedy magic show.
Then, after a lovely supper, several members of Coleorton performed a playlet titled Down on the Farm.
The main characters were expecting good food and relaxation only to find they were at a health farm! Everyone enjoyed a good laugh and went home chuckling.
The following Saturday several members attended the annual council meeting at the All Nations Centre and once again enjoyed an informative and entertaining day.
The April meeting was well attended and although there was a quite a lot of business, members soon settled down to listen to Mrs J Gaskell who told us about the Leicester Caribbean Carnival. She was surprised to hear that several people had not heard of this event. She gave a short version of the history of carnival in the Caribbean and how it started in Leicester and why it is celebrated here in August.
She then went on to show pictures of costumes and some actual headpieces etc that had been made and worn during carnival. It was interesting to learn that people make their own costumes in workshops around the city and spend almost a year making them.
The theme for next year is decided soon after the carnival. Before she finished she invited members to join in this year by supporting the carnival.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 6, at 7.30pm in the Beaumont Social Centre when members of Osgathorpe WI will join Coleorton to discuss the resolutions to be voted on at the National federation Annual General Meeting.
