CCTV appeal after bank smashed up by armed robber

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to trace after a Leicester bank was smashed up by an armed robber.

In the incident, a man armed with a hammer approached a security guard in Horsefair Street who ran off towards the Yorkshire Bank.

The suspect followed the guard into the bank assaulted him and then the suspect smashed his way out of the building after the door had been locked. He ran off empty-handed towards a people carrier which was parked near to the junction of Bowling Green Street and Horsefair Street.

The robbery took place at about 12.30pm on Friday, January 27.

The guard was treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary for minor injuries and has since been discharged.

Detective Constable Michelle Bigg said: “We are releasing images of a man we wish to identify and trace in connection with the incident and the vehicle which was used during the incident.

“The incident took place in broad daylight in the middle of the day and was witnessed by a number of people, we would urge anyone who was in the area and hasn’t yet spoken to the police to come forward.

“We believe the vehicle was a VW Sharan had false registration plates on it, GL04 HBP, if you recognise this description or you know about the car’s current whereabouts then please contact us.

“If you can help with any aspect of the inquiry then we would urge you to come forward.”

    “Well andrewduv it may not amount to actual armed robbery but your crass comment belittles what must have been a frightening experience, especially the last clause.
    To call him an armed robber is legitimate because he was armed and went with intent.”
