Nominations for the Birstall Watermead by-election had had hardly opened when Tory Councillor Peter Lewis announced Labour wasn't standing.
By the time his letter was published, I had already received formal acceptance of my nomination. This was not only supported by electors in the ward but I and my team had spoken to over 1,000 voters in Birstall already.
I'm pleased to say that nearly 300 of them told us they wanted to vote Labour.
Rather fewer would commit to the Tories and even fewer for the Lib-Dems.
Naturally, many people were still undecided and over the next three weeks I hope to persuade them to support us rather than being misled by the Tories.
Already since my nomination, we have seen unemployment falling and a widespread feeling, certainly among Birstall people, that the economy is improving.
As for Birstall itself, voters tell me the streets have never been worse, anti-social behaviour is not being tackled by the police and the village is forgotten by Charnwood.
While the Tories are carping, I am listening and acting.
Hayley Winrow, Labour Candidate for Birstall Watermead

“I do not remember the Labour run Charnwood Council investing either so grow up Eric and by the way anti-social behaviour has got worse since Labour came to power 49 changes to crime & disorder act in 13 years. The victims have been ignored by Labour and so will this candidate who promotes 13 years of failure.”

“I think Hayley would make an excellent councilor. It would be wonderful to have a young Councilor who can relate to the growing situation which is affecting my age group, 21-24, which is one of the hardest hit during the current recession.”

“A great and dedicated candidate. Hayley went to school in Birstall too. The Lib-Dems are not standing so this is a straight fight between moving forward to the 21st C with Labour or back to past with the Conservatives. Tory run Charnwood Borough Council hardly know that Birstall exists.”

“A survey organised by Labour team says less than the 30% who said they would vote Labour would vote Conservative or Lib Dems. Should people trust the results? I think not.”
