A pedestrian crossing built after a campaign by residents has opened.

The toucan crossing in Aikman Avenue, New Parks, Leicester, was installed after about 500 people signed a petition calling for it.

Patrick Kitterick, city council spokesman for regeneration and transport, said: "I'm delighted we've been able to respond to a petition presented to us by ward councillors to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

"I am sure this crossing will make it much easier for people to get to and from the shops, the medical centre, or St Aidan's Church.

"It will also provide a safer route home for schoolchildren."

The crossing, constructed at a cost of £30,000, was opened by Leicester West MP Patricia Hewitt on Friday.

She was joined by councillors for the area, Colin Hall and Stephen Corrall, and a handful of residents.

Councillor Hall said: "We had several hundred signatures on the petition and we had been fighting to get some sort of crossing for four or five years.

"We are delighted the council has finally listened to us and that the safety fears of many residents have been eased."

“Well done to the people for getting this crossing. Hopefully, it will be much safer to cross the roads.”
