He said: "I was heading to Market Harborough when I saw a huge tree which had fallen across one side of the A6, near the Kibworth shooting ground.

"It completely blocked the city-bound side of the road. I don't know if there was anyone in the car, but it looked pretty mashed up."

Peter Fearon, assistant head teacher at Kibworth High School, who was driving home to Market Harborough, said: "It must have happened shortly before I reached that section of the road.

"It looked like a couple of vehicles were involved and as I was driving away towards Harborough, an ambulance went past me in the opposite direction."

A police spokesman said: "We had a report at 4.45am of a tree coming down and a car being in collision with it.

"It is not a major incident and it is one of many we are dealing with.

"There are loads of calls about trees coming down with the wind as it is."
