Cash Giveaway: We are giving £6,000 to worthwhile causes
The Leicester Mercury has once again teamed up with Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation to give away a total of £6,000 to worthy causes over the next few weeks.
We are asking Mercury readers to nominate the groups making a real difference to communities in their area.
-

Previous cash winner: Pozitude project manager Michelle Overton
We will be giving away £1,000 a week for six weeks, with the money coming from the foundation's pot of cash donated by businesses, philanthropists, groups of friends and the Government.
Community foundation chairman Rick Moore said: "We help companies and individuals to support local needs year round, so we do know most of the good work done.
"But we are always very keen to hear of new groups."
Each week, nominations by readers will be cut to a shortlist of three, which will be published in the Mercury with details of what they would do with the cash if they won.
Readers will then be asked to vote, with winners announced each week.
The nominations for the first cash award must be in by noon on Wednesday.
The first three shortlisted groups will be published for readers to vote for on Monday, and the winner will be announced the following Monday.

“I cannot think of any worse time than when a loved one dies whether it be a spouse a parent or a child. I often wonder how the one left to bereave will survive. Most of us have remaining family who are close and who we can turn to. Some people do not have that and they are completely alone. Cruse bereavement as reported in the Leicester Mercury tonight are in danger of having to shut. I find this unacceptable. With all the cuts & the austerity going on more & more people are being left to their own devices and that is often with a tragic outcome. Do not let these poor people grieve alone as they ( as we probably will at some time) need support. It is a very worthwhile charity x”
