Sapcote: When it comes to frogs, toads and newts there is not much Kay Snowden, of Leicestershire County Council Heritage Services, doesn't know. Who better then to give a comprehensive illustrated presentation to Sapcote Heritage Group filling in the many gaps in our knowledge.
Kay tailored her talk to our love of history by opening with an old form of contraception. If a woman put a frog in her mouth and spat three times there would be no babies that year!
Appealing to our other aim - conserving all aspects of our local heritage, including the natural environment, Kay explained why the great crested newt is such a protected species and we should report any found to the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife trust. The United Kingdom and Leicestershire in particular is one of the last strongholds of this amphibious creature.
