Catholic schools use their powers
Subhash Varambhia's letter ("Faith-school failings", Mailbox, March 20) shows what we could be heading for as the number of faith schools increases.
There is nothing that Vi Dempster can or could do. It would need a change in the law.
English Martyrs does not hide this discrimination "The school will give priority to baptised Catholic children and other applications will only be considered if there are places available" (http://bit.ly/cRDQ1K)".
And it can similarly refuse a job, or promotion, or dismiss on religious grounds. Recently the head of a Catholic school was forced out of his job by the governors for remarrying after a divorce (and despite a petition by parents to support him).
All Catholic schools have these powers: all are paid for almost entirely out of taxes.
