Curve theatre is appealing to Leicester Mercury readers to help kit out pick-pocketing orphans for an upcoming community production of Oliver!

The Leicester theatre's wardrobe team is asking audiences to donate cash to help buy dozens of Victorian-style shoes for the show, which takes to the stage next month.

The theatre has a limited budget for community productions and, with about 65 amateur actors to dress, staff are hoping the public will donate about £750 to help out.

Hannah Hallam, head of business development, said: "This appeal means that even if you're not taking part in the show on stage or behind the scenes, you can still get involved and support the community production.

"Crowd funding is a fantastic way for Curve to raise money for our annual community production.

"This isn't just about what looks good on stage, this is about us giving our performers a real taste of what it means to take part in a professional large scale musical.

"Opportunities like this are hard to come by and we feel that our talented bunch of Leicester street urchins deserve to have the full theatrical experience."

Oliver! is on from Tuesday, July 31, to Sunday, August 12.

Those who donate will receive a thank-you acknowledgment ranging from their name on Curve's website to tickets to the press night and drinks reception, with a private backstage tour.
