Download Festival has followed in the footsteps of Nasa and President Obama with the launch of its official Google+ channel.

Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face with anyone with an internet connection across the globe, while potentially millions of people can tune in to watch the conversation live on the site or on YouTube.

Both the president and Nasa held live chats last month.

Download, which takes place at Donington Park, Castle Donington, north west Leicestershire, in June, is launching with chats with Cancer Bats and Young Guns, who are both on the bill.

The Google+ Hangouts will be an opportunity for Download fans to chat with their favourite bands from this year's line-up. Each band will take part in an exclusive question and answer session, chatting to eight lucky fans who will be selected by the Download team.

Hardcore punk rockers Cancer Bats are up first, speaking to fans on Thursday at 7pm, while British rockers Young Guns will be up on Tuesday, March 26, also at 7pm.

More Download Google+ Hangouts will be announced soon.

Download director Andy Copping said: "Google+ Hangouts are an incredible way for us to engage with our audience. We're excited to be using them to bring fans closer to artists and their music and can't wait to get started."

To be considered for the Cancer Bats Google+ Hangout, fans must submit one question via Twitter using the hashtag #DownloadAsks and official Twitter profile @downloadfest. The best entries will be short-listed and selected fans will be invited to join their favourite bands on the live G+.

The deadline to submit questions to Cancer Bats is noon on Tuesday.

Iron Maiden, Slipknot and Rammstein will headline this year's festival. For more, visit:
