A new boss has been appointed to run Leicester's hospitals.

John Adler will take on the job of chief executive on Monday, January 7.

Ballu Patel, chairman of the Leicester Mercury Patients' Panel, was among those who had a chance to meet the candidates as part of the selection process.

He said: "It is important to have this new appointment as Leicester's hospitals prepare for foundation trust status, whether we agree with it or not. However, in the interim, there are a number of issues which need to be addressed.

"The increasing number of accident and emergency attendances and the care of the frail and elderly patients need to be dealt with.

"The panel welcomed the opportunity to be part of the recruitment process and to be able to give our opinion."

Mr Adler's appointment to Leicester's hospitals follows the departure of Malcolm Lowe-Lauri in April this year after four years in the job.

Martin Hindle, chairman of Leicester's hospitals, said: "There was a very strong field of candidate, but John's track record of delivery, combined with his reputation for successfully working with partners in complex health communities, is precisely the experience we were looking for."

Mr Adler is a former Loughborough University student, where he met his wife, Alison. They have two children, one of whom is currently studying at Loughborough University.

Mr Adler said: "I am thrilled to have been appointed to the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

"It is one of the largest and most prestigious NHS organisations and clearly aspires to deliver excellence.

"This is an ambition which I share and I very much look forward to working with the excellent people within the trust and its partners."

    .
"Perhaps this new appointment will see the illogicality of charging for parking in a suburban hospital, all it does is motivates people to park in the ample amount of space surrounding the hospital and never mind the inhabitants getting upset at their homes being used as free unsightly car parks."

Does this mean the residents parking scheme has now been removed? Last time I went there I couldn't park in the surrounding streets due to this scheme despite the fact it was the Uni summer hols and the streets were deserted!”

“I'm all for Mr Adler's appointment - provided of course that he's not a "ring-fence the NHS budget" Tory. Let's keep the foxes out of the henhouse.”
