Christ may also be a 'fairy tale'
When making her point about Jesus's reference to Noah's Ark, Mrs M E Siddans (Mailbox, June 15) asks: "Do we accuse Christ of telling fairy tales?"
The answer is, of course, yes we do, because there is a mass of evidence for Christ doing just that throughout the New Testament.
In order to emphasise his teachings, Christ told a whole range of stories called parables, so it does not take much imagination to assume that he would refer to a parable told at an earlier point in the Bible to make his point yet again.
The dictionary describes a parable as: "A made-up story which is told with the intention of conveying a moral or religious lesson."

In this sense, they are not too dissimilar to the fables of the Greek writer Aesop who used animal characters to convey morality tales.
All of this is, of course, academic when you realise the real question is: Did Christ himself exist or is this one of the biggest fairy tales of all?

Remains of the Ark can be seen
Re the letter (Mailbox, June 11) regarding Noah's Ark, there is solid evidence that the flood was on the Earth 40 days and, when the waters prevailed, the ark was left dry on the hills.
In the seventh month on the 17th day, it came to rest in the mountains of Ararat overlooking Turkey.
It was made of cypress wood, which is very hard. The length was 500ft, breadth 50ft, height 20ft.
The remains are there today for anyone wishing to go to Ararat, but are easily reachable because of the high elevation and loose boulders.
Ararat was formed two million years ago atop of a block of uplifted rock. Photographs of the remains of the Ark were taken from a plane flying over.

Hire car tickets?
Now that the city council has started its bus lane camera experiment, can we be assured that those private hire cars which mistakenly believe that they are also classified as taxis and which are prohibited from bus lanes start to receive tickets?

“There will be no solution or conclusion to the debate, only failure to agree or manoeuvre from one's own point, Back to square one then, maybe a bit like the argument of faith down the years.”

“Likeitalot, you said "I am aware of similar work, the interface between religion and nuerosicnce/psychology through my own professional journey. It or related ideas do not prevent the decision making process as a conscious one" And you know this how? The new findings in neuroscience do not support your statement and infer that free will is an illusion, do you have any evidence to the contrary?
At least you're quite open and admit when it comes down to your belief in god, which you have stated is beyond a humans ability to define, it's matter of faith. How do you get from believing in an entity which you can't define to Jesus, blood sacrifice, hatred of homosexuals and all the other archaic biblical teachings? If you can't define it, have no evidence for it, whats the point?”

“I have to wonder if Sorengadfly actually believes half of what he writes. It's unbelievable. In the same post he says to me "You simply do not know me" in reaction to assumptions I made about him and then spends the rest of the post making assumptions about me.
I suppose the world needs people like him otherwise the churches would be empty. What a terrible world that would be.... or would it?”

My thanks for this. I am aware of similar work, the interface between religion and nuerosicnce/psychology through my own professional journey. It or related ideas do not prevent the decision making process as a conscious one. Of note in terms of religious affiliation is that many have spent years coming to that decision and thousands with a medical or other scientific background. This very often after much reasoned opposition.
The basic issue is not the determinability of a theistic entity but the dynamics of faith process. Put it another way: you can not prove or disprove God as posited in orthodox Judeo-Christian thought, the challenge of the propositional subject matter of so much of the New Testament writing is quite simple: "will you believe". That means the exercise of the mind (conscience) and the heart (will).
My last post and may your god go with you !

“Bye bye Sorengadlfy, perhaps next time your ready to post you can bring just a tiny bit of evidence with you, or perhaps answer a straight question with a straight answer.”

“Strange when confronted with themselves those who have run out of steam conclude their side of the debate and leave without really contributing to carry anything forward. As for being labelled a troll, thank you Sorengadfly for resorting to childish name calling, you are no better than those you insult. One and the same as Bullsye? you are wrong totally wrong, we share similar views but express them differently. You seem to think those who don't share your faith have demons within themselves are depressed, angry or in turmoil. How wrong can you be? I feel happier without the monkey of religion on my back. I'm not immoral, selfish, ignorant or immature. You again make so many assumptions but make no sense. Enough of my comments on your insults.
The title of this thread is "christ may also be a fairy tale" Yes Christ may be a fairy tale, in my eyes all the evidence points to this and nothing that has been contributed has changed my mind. Not that my mind is closed, more likely open to question, unlike certain contributors. Definite statements as to the existence of god only prove to me what I believe to be true. I have better things to do with my life than follow false gods, made up Messiahs, and a book written by people who didn't know better at the time. Simplistic this view may be but, it's served me well over the years. No Catholic guilt, no fear of going to hell, no need for faith just realistic, basic belief in the here and now, not the then and might have.”

“Bullseye2 3:16PM – Pointless. Why do bother to engage at all – Are You a Troll...?
DBLeicester1 4:51PM – Either one and the same person, as above,, either way when losing their way they both revert to tantrums – a little too much can do this to the brain. Short-term point scorers with no real grasp of the subject just puerile comments which is sad considering your age(s).
AllstarLEI – No thank you for the information – is that the royal 'we' or are your comrades, and ex-Socialist Workers salesmen's nothing more than trolls who seek to dominate these pages? Unable to sustain a reasonable debate, it was and is a shame you have to resort to such juvenile tactics. I hope you mature soon.
Likeitalot: I would like to thank you for your intelligent questions and reasoned argument, brief has it was I believe your contributions have been very thoughtful, and searching encouraging genuinely, firmly and fairly probing. Thank you, of all the posts it was yours I found most engaging and searching – encouraging me to search, research and learn something. And finally, I think the intervention of those who instead of arguing their corner simply ran out of steam and commitment revealed their shortcomings, and their unsustainable arguments. I therefore conclude this post, unless Larry, Curly and Moe' want to continue amongst themselves
– Children the floor is yours.”

“Thank you Sorengadfly for your last post. It was a thing of beauty. You accused me of everything we have been saying about you for some time. Transference seems to be a character trait of yours.
"no one can make peace (or even have a credible debate) with some one who is so obviously at war within themselves as you appear to be."
That is a bit of a stretch, no? Perhaps one could argue I am at war with you, but nothing I have said would indicate any ill-will toward myself. I am an extremely self-aware person. I believe the more energy we expel learning about our own strengths and weaknesses and the underlying reasons for our actions, the better we become as people. You look to god for strength, I see that as a cop out. Look into yourself instead; all the answers are already there. That is how I lead my life.
"I have no problem in identifying between what exists and what does not exist"
That is rich seeing as you speak about god in absolute terms and reference universal truths which are not universal at all; they simply exist within Christianity (which you speak of as if it is the only way).”
