City businesses have nothing to fear, insists EDL
The English Defence League has told businesses they have nothing to fear from its supporters during next weekend's planned protest in Leicester city centre.
The EDL, which says it was created to combat Islamic extremism, plans to stage a protest in the city centre on Saturday, February 4.

Leicester Unite Against Fascism hopes to stage a counter-protest on the same day.
Police are planning a major public order operation to "facilitate" peaceful protest and to combat any potential for a repeat of the violence which broke out when the EDL last staged a major protest in the city.
On that occasion, in October 2010, many businesses chose to close for the day and many premises near the protest site in Humberstone Gate East were boarded up.
Now, the EDL's local leadership has written an open letter, on Facebook, to city businesses to urge them to ignore "propaganda" it claims is being spread about its supporters' behaviour during protests.
It has passed a copy to the Leicester Mercury.
The EDL letter restates that the purpose of the march was to highlight the group's anger that, in a recent court case, four Somalian women "escaped jail for a savage street attack" on a white woman.
It says: "It has come to our attention that many communities and businesses prior to our demonstrations are misinformed by certain groups or individuals as to our intentions, and many places of business are advised to close.
"We feel this is an attempt, merely to raise tensions and undermine our message.
"I would like to assure you there is no need to close because of an English Defence League demonstration.
"We have marched through many cities and towns across the country with zero disruption to communities and that is our full and only intention for February 4."
Chief Superintendent Rob Nixon, head of city police said: "We trust that EDL will fulfil their promises as set out on the letter.
"The police have a legal duty to facilitate peaceful protests.
"We take our role of protecting our communities seriously and there is a significant policing operation in place as a precautionary measure."
Martin Traynor, chief executive of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, said: "I'm encouraged by the police approach of trying to control this march. However, based on past experience and people's perceptions of them this will still have a detrimental effect on the city centre."
Suleman Nagdi, spokesman for the Leicestershire Federation of Muslim Organisations, said: "What we have seen in other parts of the country does not instil confidence in this letter.
"So, we welcome their undertaking but we have doubts this will be the case on the day.
"If violence does break out – and we hope it does not – will they blame a fringe group they have no control over?
"They are responsible for bringing people to Leicester on that day and they have to rein in any fringe groups."
Mayor Peter Soulsby said: "We are talking to business leaders about our plans for the day, and these discussions will increase next week as more details become available.
"The success of city centre businesses is vital to Leicester and we will do whatever we can to ensure they can operate normally before, during and after the demonstrations."

“The EDL is neither needed nor wanted here. All we have seen of them shows that they have the collective IQ of a rattle, the personality of a football and the charm of a wet paper bag.”

“It is good that the EDL are claiming to want to be open about what they are planning. Perhaps "Craig Leicester" can start by telling us his real name. Also, perhaps he can tell us whether he is part of Leicester Casuals? If so, perhaps he can explain why they are saying that they won't be going to the city centre where they will be "herded by the police" but they "know where they're going" and will get there however they want. Perhaps he can explain where they're going and what they intend to do when they get there and why they don't want to let the police know?”

“@CraigLeics9 - this is the reality of the EDL in Leicester, its not anyone's propaganda, its just mobile phone footage from someone in a fast food restaurant who was saved from EDL thugs by the police - http://tinyurl.com/38t3k55 .”

“I was in town shopping yesterday and my three regular market traders all said they would not be there next Saturday because they fear that the customers will not turn up leaving them with unsold stock. What ever happened to the spirit of the blitz?
Anyway, it looks like Nottingham is the winner again.”

“day. I am more than happy to discuss this with you in greater detail if you should so wish and again, please feel free to email me at the email address above.
To this end, we would like to assure every individual as well as religious and community leaders alike, that we are here to assist you in any way we can. We would like to invite community and religious leaders to come to us with any of their concerns. We may not be able to answer every concern immediately but we will always endeavour to ensure a prompt response. The English Defence League has a trusted group of Support workers, who work relentlessly behind the scenes to resolve many queries for communities.
Please be assured that the English Defence League wish to peacefully protest in Leicester and where such Organisations as the UAF, Antifa and Hope Not Hate have not been in attendance our demonstrations have passed without any problems.
Yours faithfully

“To whom it may concern,
Re: English Defence League - Forthcoming demonstration.
We, The English Defence League, plan to hold a peaceful demonstration in Leicester City Centre on February 04, 2012.
I would therefore, like to take this opportunity to re-iterate and re-assure you that the English Defence League only wish to peacefully protest against Racism and our religious and racially appeasing two - tier justice system .We are not racist, we are not islamaphobic, but we are extremely worried about these issues, and the fact that victims of such are left with little, or no, sense of justice from our courts.
The English Defence League was formed in 2009 following a homecoming parade in Luton, where our homecoming soldiers were spat at, abused and harassed. We are a grass roots organisation; we are not racist, nor are we political.
The English Defence League has among its member's people from all walks of life, of any race and religion, hence, our slogan, black and white unite. We feel that Black, White or Asian, although we may have cultural differences, we are all the same, "every person matters" and in the UK we should all live by one law, English law.
However, that said, it has become increasingly evident that there is an anti English sentiment amongst some communities of Leicester, and that our Justice system frequently does not pursue crimes of hate, such as racism when the victims are English people. For racial equality to be "equal" this cannot continue. Victims cannot be left feeling let down by their own society whilst the perpetrators are let off because they are of a certain religion or race and were not used to something they chose to do!
In order to understand this better I urge you to look into the case of Rhea Page who was attacked in Leicester City Centre. I am sure in doing so you will arrive at the only conclusion anyone could arrive at: Gross injustice.
This is why we are returning to Leicester, it is not our intention to divide communities but to unite them.
It has come to our attention that many communities and businesses prior to our demonstrations are misinformed by certain groups or individuals as to our intentions, and many places of business are advised to close. We feel this is an attempt, merely to raise tensions and undermine our message. I would like to assure you there is no need to close because of an English Defence League demonstration. We have marched through many cities and towns across the Country with zero disruption to communities and that is our full and only intention for the 4th of February.
As I am sure you are aware, there is always a lot of propaganda surrounding such events, much of which is rarely true and some may say this is scaremongering. However, the decision to close businesses on what is possibly the busiest day of the week can only be made by the business owner.
The English Defence League believe businesses do not need to close, especially not during such difficult economic times and re-iterate this is just propaganda put out by those that wish to cause problems and raise tensions.
Prior to an EDL demonstration you will find people representing such organisations as the UAF, Antifa, and Hope Not Hate, regularly go around the locality giving out misinformation about the EDL and its members and I would like to re-assure you we are not the BNP. We are not against all Muslims nor are we against any creed or colour. If you have any doubts, questions or concerns please feel free to contact me and I will endeavour to put your mind at rest.
We would also like to point out that under the Freedom of Information act everybody can access statistics of arrests for our demonstrations. Should you wish to do so you will find that many of the numbers stated in the press are in fact from opposing groups such as Unite Against Fascism who carry out counter demonstrations on the same day. I am more than happy to discuss this with you in greater detail if you”

“if there are serious questions to be raised about the perception of the Islamification of the UK, from what I've seen of the EDL, they're not the people that are equipped to ask those questions.
Go into town next week and see who they are, see if you feel safe. Then go and see the UAF. See if you you feel safe... Shame that the Comedy Festival may be affected when these charmers are loose around the Cultural Quarter...”
