Tonight's cornucopia of delights at the monthly Song Club at the Donkey features a superb singer/songwriter last seen fronting Leicester's Baby Genius.

JJ Nolan has been lying low and writing new material in Nottingham. Expect sultry soulful anthems from this piano-led songstress, writes Chris Beggs.

Returning to The Song Club are "Leicester's finest purveyors of catchy synth-pop ", Sugarsnatch, plus instrumentalist Simon Faulks.

New to The Donkey is Canadian chanteuse, Sheena Grobb, currently touring the UK with her sister.

Expect a singer, songwriter, pianist and guitar player, with "beautifully discordant piano stylings, jazzy guitar licks and a breathy, pure and powerful voice."

Don't bother turning up to The Donkey for tomorrow's "secret gig" – it's sold out. Well, it's too late to keep a secret; it's the Fun Lovin' Criminals.

Also tonight, over at The Music Cafe, New Park Street, Braunstone Gate, is a Shadow Promotions gig featuring glam rockers, Towers of London, along with city indie-mod-punk outfit The Heroes and ska-pop-punksters, Last Edition.

Saturday at The Shed, Yeoman Street, sees the second heat of the Original Band Showcase, with 35 bands competing over 10 heats for great prizes.

Saturday's contenders are city alternative rockers, Ashdowne, and electro-popsters Drive by Disco.

There's rock from Whitwick's Identity Parade, while Wayward Trippers mix jazz and funk and The Pennyhangers play indie. Doors 7.30pm.

Finally, on Sunday, The Criterion, Mill Lane, hosts a Glynfest promotion featuring Beyond This Point Are Monsters, Dead Spex, My Psychoanalyst and Lured Into German Porn.

Doors 8pm, admission £3.
