A young Leicestershire climber is making huge strides in her first season competing for Great Britain.

Tara Hayes, a 13-year-old who is coached at Leicester's Tower Climbing Centre, finished sixth in the European Youth Cup event in Edinburgh.

In her first event for Britain, Hayes was given the unenviable task of climbing first for the qualifying stage and, after the first of her two climbs, she was 15th.

After being given time to assess the wall and watch her rivals, she put in an impressive climb to be fourth on the second run and qualify for the 10-strong final in eighth.

The finalists had only six minutes to plan their climbs and were kept in isolation during their opponents' attempts.

Hayes reached the third level on a grade 8b difficulty wall, which put her sixth overall.

Coach Iain McKenzie said: "Tara's performance was fantastic for her first European Youth Cup."
