Lutterworth have been sent crashing to the bottom of the Premier Division.

The Coventry Road club have been hit with a 310-point penalty by a management committee ruling over a player eligibility issue.

It means the 2009 champions will be relegated unless they mount a successful appeal.

Lutterworth are the second club to be docked points in a week. Leicester Ivanhoe received a 142-point penalty from another ruling under rule 11d eight days ago. They are appealing.

The decisions have implications for other clubs because another rule states that, if a team field a player deemed to be ineligible, their opponents are awarded a maximum haul of 24 points.

Loughborough Town, who gained only 10 points from a rain-hit draw against Lutterworth two weeks ago, have now been handed another 14 points. That increases their lead at the top of the table to 35 points.

“The penalties regarding ineligible players are clearly set out in the League rules. If you think them too harsh, suggest a change at the AGM. The majority of clubs have excellent youth systems and provide opportunities for young players to compete at the highest level without breaking the rules. The committee should look at the facts, if the rules have been breached then accept the penalty you knew about beforehand, if not, any appeal will surely be successful.”

“I think this penalty is too harsh. The punishment meted out it is believed is disproportionate and should be reviewed. This club does not have any "super stars" and has done extremely well in the last few years with limited resources. They have an excellent youth system and are providing the opportunity for these young players to play in the league at the highest levels. I hope the committee will have a re-think and in the interests of club cricket revoke the penalty imposed. Thank you”
