Coach Glenys Morton says she is confident that Eden Francis will compete in both the shot and the discus at the London Olympics this summer.

The Leicester 23-year-old boosted her hopes by winning the shot at the Aviva World Indoor Trials and UK Championships on Saturday in Sheffield with a stadium best of 16.72 metres, just 20cm below her pb, which she set in Austria at the start of this month.

Morton, who is also Francis's mother, says she is on track despite having knee surgery in September.

She said: "I think Eden will make the Olympic squad.

"We are hoping she will qualify for both events. We have got a few months and a lot of hard work to do in the meantime, but the objective is to qualify for both.

"We were hoping she would have qualified for the shot by now so she could concentrate on the discus when the outdoor season opens.

"But the fact that she has improved greatly on last season shows that, despite knee surgery, which hampered her training until November, it has not put her back too much.

"We are happy with the progress she is making. We are learning all the time, she is learning all the time.

"We are working on various aspects of her throwing. Things are better than we would have hoped for at this time of the year. As far as I'm concerned she is on track.

"The idea was to get a solid start to the season. And I don't think she could have had a more solid start after improving 80cm on her indoor pb. That is a measure of her strength at this stage."

The A standard qualifying distance for the shot is 18.20m and the B standard is 17.20m. In the discus, the two standards are 62m and 59.50m. Francis achieved the B standard twice last year.

Morton said: "Eden is fairly close to the B standard in the shot and, realistically, there is no-one else who can really make the A or B standard.

"Eden is looking, fingers crossed, to get the A standard, but we think she can get the B without too much of a problem.

"I think the fact that she has done two Bs in the discus has given her the confidence to go into this season thinking 'yes I can make the A'.

"Her target is to make the Olympics final, and going in with 59.50 is not necessarily going to get her into the final.

"If she goes in with the A standard of 62 metres, that could get a final place."

Morton said Francis would probably not compete again until the Loughborough International in May, although she may consider going to America for a couple of competitions in April.

She added: "She has got a couple of days of light training to recuperate from the last few weeks and then she is back into heavy training. If something crops up that she likes we might consider it."
