Humberstone: A coffee morning organised by Abbots Road Monday Group raised £165 for Christian Aid.

Lots of delicious cakes were on sale as well as some plants and a raffle was also held.

Netherhall: Seventeen-year-old Sophie Gasgoine recently took part in the 2009 National Championships for baton twirling, held in Portsmouth over three days.

Sophie had some success on the first day, winning her section for solo twirling for which she was presented with a trophy and a national champion sash.

She took second place for her fancy strut, third in her two baton and fourth in her dance section.

Her next competition is in July in Strasbourg. She is hoping to extend her achievements.

Humberstone: The WI has discussed a resolution which is to go before the national meeting, asking for more funds for research into honey bees.

After the discussion members listened to each other reading prose and poetry.

Some of the words read out were funny, while some were about serious matters such as the environment.
