A college is offering students the opportunity to learn the basics of the construction trade.

South Leicestershire College, in Wigston, runs courses in brickwork, carpentry and joinery plus painting and decorating.

The college said companies investing in young people were seeing the benefits of training.

Builder Ellis and Hughes, of Leicester, took on two South Leicestershire College students at the end of their course and gave them the opportunity to gain an NVQ 2 in brickwork.

Tim Knight, from the company, said: "An injection of youth has benefited the whole workforce as well as increasing output.

"The industry is picking up and any young people starting their training now will reap the rewards in two years if they follow their training through."
